We were able to join students from Dos Rios Elementary School and spread some holiday cheer this morning. Several students had expressed an interest in sewing so their teacher, Eva Serrano, embraced their request. Eva has been working on a makerspace area for students to come explore and create during their recess times, and it is partially funded through a 21st Century Education Grant from The Success Foundation. The space includes several sewing machines, and she utilized the school’s existing partnership with Cornerstone Community Church. Members of the church joined the students and taught them everything from threading the bobbin and needle, to cutting and pinning the fabric and sewing it together.Students sewed beautiful Christmas stockings, stuffed with Christmas Cards and Crossword Puzzles, and delivered them to residents at Ashley Manor Memory Care. It was a joy to watch the recipients’ faces light up as they were handed their stocking. This wonderful project not only gave these students a chance to learn something new, it brightened the day of many people this holiday season.
