Grant recipient Kathy Azari at Brentwood Middle School, purchased a new keyboard and a commissioned piece of music by local composer, Peter Romero. The piece, titled The Visitation, is written for horn and piano, and is specifically written to incorporate the natural sounds around us. Mr. Romero began composing the piece, by going to the Poudre Learning Center and just listening. He listened to the sounds around him, and took a few recordings of birds chirping. He then slowed those recordings down, and wrote the notes the birds sang into the piece. The piece imitates the natural sounds around us that we often don’t consider to be music.
We had the chance to talk to horn player, Rudi Herrig, about the piece. Rudi is in 8th grade, and said performing it has been an inspiration. “It made me think about how composers are real people, like Mr. Romero, the composer of this piece. I always heard of Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart, and thought of only their music, but having a live person write this piece made me feel more connected to all of the old composers because they were people just like me too.”
The world premier of The Visitation will take place at 9a.m. on April 14th at the Poudre Learning Center.
